About Us
Farm to family was originated to connect local farms with communities in the hopes to re-establish a personal relationship with locally grown food and to encourage a local diet of fresh grown products here in central VA. There is a huge disconnect with our food and the origination of it, globally and nationally. Most modern methods of food distribution can involve thousands of miles before it reaches a plate. Farm to Family is a mobile micro farmers market that was converted from a 1987 international school bus. Our mission is to reach those who want fresh quality produce and locally produced commodities who might not otherwise have the means to do so. We do not discriminate between neighborhoods rich or poor, we come to you! Although we want to support low-income neighborhoods most we are not a non-profit and can be challenging.
It is imperative that younger and older generations learn more about their food and the sources that it comes from. It is not only healthier to eat locally home grown or organic food it is also supporting the small struggling farms and farmers that will soon become obsolete. The only way to stop this is to reach out and support the efforts of everyone involved in the movement of local sustainability. Supporting each other and supporting local farmers will create more local jobs lower our carbon footprint and keep the local economy stimulated. It is crucial to keep local dollars within the community during hard economic times. Farm to Family is a vehicle for community support, outreach, fellowship, stewardship, education, entertainment, for families bonding again with each other, their neighbors and their food.
We can come to schools and do workshops with kids on growing food and gardening! Being more self sustainable is a goal everyone should be focusing on. It will be a priceless tool when faced with any disaster situation. A food system that relies heavily on a finite resource (fossil fuels) for mass production to feed the world is a system that will eventually fail. Now is the time to get involved at any level of self sustainability. Most importantly it starts with your own family, then your community, your state, your county and the whole earth. One person can not change the world but together we can make a difference. As the fossil fuels run dry it is the younger generations that will need to be educated on food and water security issues.
My recent graduate studies at the University of Richmond in Disaster Science/emergency management program led me down this road/path of awareness and I became so passionate about the dire situation we are/could be facing (food/water insecurity) that I wanted to try and help change it. I dropped the program and started Farm to Family as I knew this was my calling. Thanks for everyone who has helped me with this venture/concept. It will only continue to grow and help change lives with your support.
